"Ladybird" ~ (or Bug!) ~ House Tutorial...

Posted on 7:43 PM by jimmy

When I was small, I thought it was so confusing to hear Ladybugs

referred to as "Ladybirds"...(that was First Lady Mrs. Johnson, right?)

Weren't they bugs?

I probably read this somewhere...maybe a book I had called them that.

Anyway, Cornell University refers to them as Ladybugs, Ladybirds and Lady Beetles.

You can read more about them here...

They are so good for the garden!

So, even though they are not birds, the Fairies can refer to them as such if they want.

And provide little houses for them.

;^)

~

Here's what I used; a marble-sized amount of lavender polymer clay;

a tiny bit of brown clay, an acorn cap, a sort-of straight twig

(I used chopsticks for the first ones, and you can do that...I rubbed a

little brown antiquing gel on them ~ but this looks better, I think);

liquid polymer, and a little Pearl Ex mica powder.

A paintbrush was my only tool.

~

 photo may115_zpsbdeec3e5.jpg

~

Condition the lavender clay well by kneading it until soft;

roll it into a sort of egg-shape; flattening the ends a little.

You want your house's roof to have a little overhang,

so you may have to adjust the amount of clay you use, depending on the size of the cap.

I used a drop of the liquid polymer as "glue", but if you don't have any,

just pretend that you do and put the "roof" on, anyway ~

then you can use regular glue to attach it permanently after it's baked.

The liquid polymer just saves a step.

Set the house aside for now.

~

 photo may116_zpsd8085014.jpg

~

I could have used a toothpick for the perch...

I knew that a twig that small would be too fragile...

But I liked the fact that I could make a tiny snake of clay,

bake it, and then cut it to size with scissors and it would look

more like a miniature "dowel"; the look I was going for.

I rolled it out super-skinny and baked it for 30 minutes.

~

 photo may119_zps48dc4b9c.jpg

~

While waiting for the perch to bake, I used the end of the brush handle to make a door.

Then I used the handle again to make texture on the surface of the clay.

The house will probably be a little misshapen now, but you can re-shape it

and give it texture at the same time...

After it had cooled completely (it will be too soft and flexible to do this

with while it's still warm), I pushed the perch into the clay, right under the door.

Then I removed it and put a drop of liquid polymer in the hole

before replacing the perch. I also trimmed it a little more with scissors at this point.

~

 photo may1110_zpsfec78aed.jpg

~

Use the paintbrush handle (it's much sturdier!) to make a hole in the bottom

of the house for the twig. I used a drop of liquid polymer here, too.

~

 photo may1111_zpse7588a72.jpg

~

Lightly brush with a little Pearl Ex powder, and bake for 45 minutes at 275° ~

(Using Premo...refer to specific directions if using another clay.)

 Ta-Da! ~ You have a Ladybird
Ladybug
house for your Fae!

I think they would look cute in a potted plant, too.

Update on the robins...

I read that it takes 12-14 days for the eggs to hatch, and I think this is only day 8...

In the meantime, the parents watch me carefully when I go near

their little willow!

When the babies hatch, I will take pictures every day. :^)

Just to reassure myself, and maybe some of you, I looked this up about baby birds  ~ ♥

Cyrus has chosen a new napping-spot, I discovered this afternoon ~

(Look at his little tongue...he often leaves it sticking out a little ~ I think it's so cute!

Sometimes it's way out...)

His spot is behind the door, behind the sack of kitty food...

He wants to be sure he's the first to know when I put more in the bowls!

And finally, Tallulah ~ helping me from her little cushion by the computer...

(If she doesn't have this, she sits on the keyboard...)

Have a Happy Mother's Day, all!

The Kettle Fairy Garden ~ 2013

Posted on 7:43 PM by jimmy

~

Good Friday evening, everyone!

I've been playing outside again...

Things have been so busy here that we haven't had a chance

to go to Arkansas for more gourds,

So I thought I would recreate my little "Fairy-Garden-in-a-Kettle"

with a few of this years houses...

(See last year's post about the kettle and garden here ~ )

I still plan on doing a larger "village" in the raised herb bed...

But I wanted to play now...:^)

~

I love, love, love using tiny-leaved Thyme as Fairy "landscaping"...

Here I used Common Thyme on each side of the steps,

and Orange Thyme back by the Toad House...

~

 photo may103_zpsdb7533da.jpg

~

I know, I have a blogging week's worth of photos...;^)

There are a lot more, actually...

What did we do before digital photography??

(I myself took rolls and rolls and rolls of film...and hoped for the best!)

~

Uh, oh!

The Fairy has left her slippers out in the rain!

Aren't these little Pansy "faces" sweet?

And the yellow and white striped Calibrachoas ~ "Lemon Slice" ~

(Love that ~ I am such a pushover for a name!

I think companies that don't name their products (no matter what they are)

...or maybe just number them ~

are totally missing the boat,  don't you agree?) ~

were an early Mother's Day gift (as well as the Alyssum) from daughter Katie...:^)

These don't even look real, do they?

They look like little silk flowers...but the are a "mounding perennial"...so pretty!

Neon Rose Saxifraga...

Tiny and very "Fairy-ish"~looking!

I'll post a tutorial for these on Saturday...another fun little project!

We found this rock that looks like a little cave

in a creek near Meramac Caverns...

I made a little polymer banner...in the hope that we see Peter (the Toad) again this year...♥

Candied Violets, Robin's Nests, and Prom...

Posted on 7:59 PM by jimmy

Hi, Everyone!

Not a very catchy title for a post, huh?

(I almost called it "Raining Violets" because it poured all day yesterday...)

But the odd combination pretty much sums up the last two days here ~ ;^)

~

 photo may45_zps62713449.jpg

~

First, ever since I went to the empty lot (where Mrs. Howell's house once stood)

to take pictures last week, I've thought about candied violets...

It's been a Bucket List Item for quite a while now ~

just a minor one, though...

I haven't exactly had a burning desire to make them, I just thought about it

every spring when I would see drifts of them in bloom...

I must have watched Martha Stewart make them at some point.

So, I decided I would do it.

I looked up the directions, and went back

to trespass again and pick some violets.

Of course, everyone in the old neighborhood

had decided to mow since I was there...

and there just weren't any violets; not where there had been, anyway.

(Sad...I personally wouldn't mow until all the violets had finished blooming!)

It was also raining cats and dogs.

I was determined, though ~ (I had already bought ultra-fine sugar at Schnuck's...

you can't even get it in little ol' Sikeston.)

So, I started driving down all the alleys, and I did find a few violets

that the mowers had missed...

I probably looked like I was staking out people's houses, too...

But after a dozen or so stops, I finally got a nice little bunch, and I was pleased.

Drenched, but pleased!

♥

 photo may46_zps7f97895c.jpg

~

 photo may43_zpse4a1205c.jpg

~

The ingredients are simple;

One egg white, whisked together with 1/3 cup of water...

and the Ultrafine Sugar....(which is REALLY fine!)

If you are concerned about salmonella, you can use meringue powder.

~

 photo may47_zpsf5b24096.jpg

~

The directions I found said to use a small paint brush to coat the leaves,

but that was so tedious....

(It also said to do this until you'd done a couple of dozen, or until you wanted

to scream ~ "whichever comes first" ...) ~

So after trying a couple this way, I just dunked the whole violet (holding it by the stem)

in the egg-white mixture, then used the brush to gently separate the petals.

Much better.

~

 photo may49_zpsb4753e2c.jpg

~

The original directions also said to dredge the egg-white-coated violet

in the sugar, but that just resulted in a mishapen blossom...

What worked better for me was to put some of the sugar in a shaker

and sprinkle it on; much more uniform coverage,

and it didn't weigh the petals down.

The petals still are pretty heavily coated, just not "clumpy" this way.

(Note to self...empty the rest of that sugar before someone mistakes it for salt...:^)

~

 photo may48_zps10599b09.jpg

~

After dunking and sprinkling one at a time, I placed the violets on a piece of parchment

paper, and snipped off the stems.

The sugar is so fine that that it is immediately soaked through by the egg-white

mixture and will be wet, but about 10-15 minutes drying time in the oven remedies that ~

Just put the parchment paper on a cookie sheet ~

Set your oven on the lowest temperature with the door open slightly.

I'm sure the rain and the year-round humidity

 of Swamp-East Missouri wasn't helping!

After they've dried you can supposedly store them in an air-tight container...

I would think maybe the refrigerator would be a good idea, too ~

But where's the fun in that?

I had to take these in my bedroom and hide them so I would have

some left for cupcake decor today!

~

 photo may42_zpse3a7299c.jpg

~

 photo may41_zpsd9243e56.jpg

~

Ta-da!

Pretty, and quaint, and kind of Victorian-looking, don't you think?

They tasted like...well ~

If you rolled up a little tiny ball of lettuce and dipped it in sugar and dried it,

that's pretty much what they taste like.

But it was fun.

(Jonathan couldn't wait to eat this cupcake!)

Another thing I can mark off my list.

;^)

~

~

Robin's nests!

The top photo is right by the back door going out onto the patio,

on the support for my big wind chimes...

it's also where the birds kept bringing straw last year, and the wind kept

blowing it down into my little Fairy Garden in the big iron kettle,

so we put a rubber snake up there ~ problem solved ~ last year...

Evidently this Mama Robin isn't worried about a snake

that hasn't changed positions in a year's time...

I guess we need a new snake, but I don't have the heart to disturb her now...

I'll just have to pick straw off of the flowers in the kettle.

~

The second photo is a nest that is just slightly above head-high for me ~ and I am 5' 1" ~

in one of our little willow trees...

The robin couple worked on this nest all last week...

I had been meaning to get a mirror to see if there were eggs

for the past couple of days, and I finally did this afternoon...

~

 photo may411_zps603356d8.jpg

~

Four!!

Aren't they beautiful?

I'll try to get a photo every day or so, but I'll be careful not to disturb the Mama Robin.

♥

 photo may410_zps6b4cff3d.jpg

~

And last but not least...Prom.

The last one.

Jonathan didn't have a "Pink Carnation and a pick-up truck",

but he did have a "PT Cruiser and a coral rose" ~

You can make that work with the melody.

Try it, if you haven't already ~ :^)

That's all for tonight!

I have to go practice my own "Empty-Nesting"...

Have a delightful Sunday!

Love,

Photobucket

A last minute addition!

Jonathan just came by the house...

sans the girl with the coral rose...

Prom is over, and he is off to a bonfire with his buddies...

He got dressed for the dance at a friend's;

(evidently the guys didn't want to wear their tuxes to the restaurant,

for fear of getting "something on them"...hmmm)

He stopped for just a minute to let me get a picture!

Hi, Everyone!

Happy May Day!

Rabbit, Rabbit! (Did you say it?)...:^)

I know, it's almost over...

It's the thought that counts, though, right?

I'm thinking my Fairy Village needs a Maypole...

Fairies should be able to use one year-round, don't you think?

~

Yesterday, April 30th, was my oldest son Mark's birthday...

He is older than I think of myself being!

~

Daughter Katie had a good idea...we could celebrate by all

 going to see Jurassic Park
in 3-D...

We did, and it was so much fun!

(Before we left, though, we had cupcakes with little dinosaurs on them ~ :^)

Daughter Mandy came down from St. Charles...

(That was supposed to be a surprise, but I slipped...) ~

We were in an almost-empty theatre ~

So it was almost like a private showing...

Mandy said that in our 3-D glasses, we looked like this character, Dr. Malcolm...

Have a great Thursday, all!

More soon!
